Islamabad has achieved a significant milestone in public transport as all 21 electric bus routes across the capital are now fully operational. The initiative, implemented under instructions of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, is designed to offer residents affordable, modern, and environmentally friendly transportation options. The electric bus service has already attracted daily ridership exceeding 102,000 passengers, reflecting growing public demand for reliable and sustainable commuting solutions.

The electric bus project was launched to reduce dependency on fuel, mitigate urban pollution, and enhance mobility across Islamabad. The Capital Development Authority has steadily expanded both routes and supporting infrastructure in response to increasing passenger volumes. Residents have welcomed the service due to its low fares, punctual schedules, and improved connectivity between key residential and commercial areas. Authorities emphasized that expanding public transport infrastructure is part of a broader strategy to modernize the city while promoting sustainable urban development.

Officials highlighted progress during a high-level meeting chaired by CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa, where key development projects across the capital were reviewed. Authorities confirmed that all 21 routes are now active, with depots at two locations nearing completion. Site A has been fully constructed, while overall work stands at 97 percent. The meeting also touched on other infrastructure projects, including the linkage of Margalla Avenue with M-1 Motorway, and proposed developments such as a Convention, Expo and Exhibition Centre, along with a luxury hotel.

With rising fuel costs and traffic congestion, the fully operational electric bus network is expected to alleviate commuting pressures and provide an environmentally sustainable alternative to traditional transport. Officials noted that continued investment in clean transport and modern mobility solutions will improve urban quality of life while supporting Islamabad’s long-term growth. As the service expands, authorities plan to maintain focus on route efficiency, passenger convenience, and infrastructure readiness, ensuring the city’s public transport system meets increasing demand.
