In response to the delayed launch of 5G technology in the country, the government has taken a strategic decision to enhance the reach of the existing 4G service. Syed Amin-ul-Haque, the Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication, announced on Wednesday that the government’s immediate focus is to expand the coverage of the 4G service, with a target of achieving 60% coverage.

At present, the nationwide coverage of the 4G service falls short of the desired 60% mark. Minister Amin-ul-Haque emphasized that the launch of 5G technology will proceed once the 4G coverage has surpassed the 60% milestone. This strategic approach aims to ensure a strong foundation before introducing the next-generation network.

To facilitate this expansion, the government intends to reduce the spectrum cost, making it more affordable and accessible for the general public. By reducing the financial burden, more telecom operators can participate in expanding the 4G coverage, enabling a wider population to benefit from improved connectivity.

In addition to addressing network coverage, significant amendments have been made to the Personal Data Protection Bill following an incident on May 9. The amendments specifically prohibit security agencies from engaging in any form of activity on social media platforms. The government aims to enhance national security and safeguard sensitive information by restricting such activities.

Minister Amin-ul-Haque highlighted that the Data Protection Bill has been tailored to create a business-friendly environment, fostering growth and innovation. The government recognizes the importance of balancing data protection measures with the needs of businesses, encouraging a secure digital ecosystem that supports economic development.

While the launch of 5G technology remains on hold, efforts to strengthen the existing infrastructure and prioritize data protection play a crucial role in building a secure and efficient digital landscape. The government’s strategic focus on expanding 4G coverage and enhancing data protection reflects its commitment to providing reliable connectivity and safeguarding personal information in the evolving digital era.
