Celebrating The Queen of Pop Music: Google Pays Tribute to Nazia Hassan
The queen of pop (and hearts!) Nazia Hassan would have celebrated her 53rd birthday today. Honouring the legacy she has left behind, Google has dedicated their Google Doodle to the artist.
Nazia was born in 1965 and began her career at the age of 10 through the Pakistan Television (PTV) programme Sung Sung. Within a short span of time; she became one of the most popular artists in Pakistan and India. Through the 70s and 80s, Nazia was known as the Queen of Pop Music.

Elaborating on the doodle, Google writes,
“When young Pakistani girls in the 1980s closed their eyes and clutched a pretend mic in their hands, swaying and singing, a major inspiration was Nazia Hassan. Hassan, sometimes referred to as the “Princess of Pop”, was a sensation the likes of which hadn’t been seen in the region in years.
Young and graceful, with long flowing hair, she charmed the country by belting out favorite songs “Disco Deewane” and “Boom Boom” alongside her brother Zohaib.
Some of Nazia’s best-known work is with her brother, Zohaib. Together, they went on to sell over 60million records globally. She is also the first Pakistani to have won a Filmfare Award for her work.
The Google Doodle information page notes,
“She was the first Pakistani singer to reach the British charts with her English version of ‘Disco Deewane’, called ‘Dreamer Deewane'”
Nazia was also known for her work as an activist. A graduate of Richmond, The American International University and University of London, Nazia made use of her law degree and worked for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
