Google has recently increased the price of its Google One subscription in Pakistan, affecting users who rely on the service for additional cloud storage beyond the standard 15GB available with free accounts. The Basic plan, which previously cost Rs. 219 per month, has now risen to Rs. 419, marking a significant jump of nearly 100%. Annual subscribers will see the price adjustment reflected in their next billing cycle, with the yearly cost now set at Rs. 4,199.
A Google One subscription provides expanded storage for Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos, with higher-tier plans offering additional features such as unlimited access to the Magic Editor for Google Photos, Google Workspace Premium, and Gemini Advanced, among others. These features make the service particularly valuable for users who need extensive cloud storage and enhanced tools for productivity and media management.
The sudden increase in subscription costs has led to speculation that the hike is linked to fluctuations in Pakistan’s exchange rate with the US dollar. However, this assumption does not hold up under scrutiny for two key reasons. First, the exchange rate has remained relatively stable in recent months, meaning it does not justify such a sharp increase in pricing. Second, this is not an issue isolated to Pakistan, as Google has raised Google One prices across more than 15 other countries, including Australia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Egypt, Ghana, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Nigeria, Paraguay, Peru, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Türkiye, and Tanzania.
Existing Google One subscribers will see the new pricing take effect on their renewal date on or after March 21, 2025. Those who do not wish to continue with their subscription at the updated rate can cancel their membership before March 20, 2025, to avoid the increased charges. Google has officially attributed the price increase to the rising costs associated with maintaining and expanding its cloud infrastructure.
“The cost of providing reliable and secure cloud storage and related services has increased.”
A Google support representative explained. The company points to infrastructure maintenance, data center expansion, and the continued development of new features as the primary factors behind the price adjustment. The increase in Google One prices comes at a time when more users are relying on cloud storage for both personal and professional use. With the growing need for secure online storage solutions, many users may have little choice but to accept the higher costs or seek alternative services. However, given the extensive integration of Google’s cloud storage ecosystem across its services, many customers are likely to continue their subscriptions despite the price hike.
