Fortnite has made its global return to Google Play, ending an absence of more than five years that began with one of the most closely watched legal confrontations in the history of mobile app distribution. The battle royale title, developed by Epic Games, is once again available as a free download on the platform worldwide, with the return timed to coincide with the launch of Fortnite Showdown, the game’s latest season, giving players a fresh reason to return to one of the most popular titles in gaming history.

The origins of Fortnite’s removal from both Google Play and Apple’s App Store date back to August 2020, when Epic Games deliberately introduced its own external payment system for in-game purchases, bypassing the standard payment infrastructure and the associated commission fees charged by both platforms. Google and Apple responded by removing Fortnite from their respective stores, and Epic Games filed legal challenges against both companies, arguing that their payment policies constituted anticompetitive behaviour that harmed developers and consumers alike. The legal battles that followed were lengthy and consequential, ultimately resulting in outcomes that compelled both platforms to change how they handle payments from third-party developers. Both Google Play and the Apple App Store now permit developers to use alternative payment systems, which carry lower commission fees and remove certain restrictions that had previously limited how developers and users could conduct transactions within applications.

Fortnite’s return to Google Play followed a staggered timeline. It was relisted on the Apple App Store in May of last year, and made its reappearance on the United States version of Google Play in December before the global restoration was completed this month. With the worldwide availability now fully restored, players on Android devices across all markets can once again download the game directly through the official Google Play store, bringing to a close a chapter that reshaped the commercial and legal landscape of app distribution and set precedents for how platform operators and developers negotiate the terms of digital marketplace participation.
