ISLAMABAD: Federal Board of Revenue has initiated a comprehensive exercise to scrutinise the tax affairs of wealthy individuals who maintain a low profile in the tax net yet display high-end lifestyles on social media. Officials disclosed that a dedicated social media monitoring team has gathered data on around 100,000 individuals who regularly share images of luxurious bungalows, expensive vehicles, jewellery, and extravagant personal expenditures. This effort is part of a broader move to close gaps in tax compliance and ensure that individuals with significant incomes are accurately reporting and paying their dues.
Sources within FBR indicated that the department is not only examining personal displays of wealth but also focusing on large-scale spending habits, including lavish weddings. Officials have highlighted examples where wedding suits valued at around $20,000 each have been publicly showcased. Such expenditures will now be cross-referenced with declared income in tax returns. Individuals who fail to declare these expenditures accurately will be required to justify the source of funds and may face strict measures if discrepancies emerge. This is intended to create a deterrent effect, encouraging individuals to proactively update their tax filings.
FBR has further announced that it will compare last year’s filed returns with the current year’s submissions, with plans to audit up to 80 percent of the total returns. Those whose spending patterns far exceed their declared income will be contacted and asked to explain the disparity. Officials have stated that the objective is to bring transparency and equity into the system, ensuring that all taxpayers contribute according to their means. The data gathered through social media is expected to serve as a powerful tool in identifying potential under-reporting.
According to FBR, individuals who voluntarily update their income declarations and provide accurate information will not be subject to immediate questioning. This approach is meant to give taxpayers a final opportunity to rectify their returns before enforcement action is taken. Those who continue to conceal income or fail to declare an increase in earnings risk facing stringent legal consequences. By adopting this proactive monitoring strategy, FBR aims to increase compliance and strengthen trust in the taxation process, signalling a shift towards data-driven oversight of high-spending segments of society.
