FBR Rolls Out Digital Invoicing System To Automate Tax Reporting In Pakistan

Federal Board of Revenue has rolled out a digital invoicing system for all sales tax-registered taxpayers in Pakistan, aiming to modernise tax compliance and improve transparency in reporting. The system is designed to simplify processes for businesses while ensuring more accurate data and reducing manual intervention. Corporate taxpayers are being connected on a priority basis as part of a phased integration plan.

Businesses can link their invoicing systems with FBR through licensed integrators, while Pakistan Revenue Automation Limited is offering free integration services to facilitate adoption. Once connected, the system automatically generates digital invoices with QR codes and unique identification numbers. Both suppliers and buyers gain immediate access to these invoices through a dedicated digital portal, allowing for easier recordkeeping and faster verification of transactions.

According to FBR, the introduction of digital invoicing will bring significant improvements in the quality of data reporting and overall efficiency. The platform features a taxpayer Business Intelligence dashboard providing a detailed record of invoices, including their number, type, and value. This dashboard is intended to give businesses a clearer overview of their tax position and streamline compliance requirements. By centralising invoicing data, the system also helps reduce errors associated with manual entry and enhances the ability of authorities to monitor tax activity.

Taxpayers can load approved invoices into their respective tax periods with a single click, which FBR says will save time and reduce administrative costs for businesses. The automated approach is also expected to make audits and reconciliations more straightforward, reducing the burden on both companies and the tax authority. Officials highlighted that the system aligns with broader efforts to digitise government services and provide businesses with more reliable tools for managing compliance obligations.

By offering integration options through both private integrators and PRAL, FBR aims to encourage widespread participation and make the transition as smooth as possible. Officials believe the initiative will ultimately help establish a transparent and efficient tax environment that benefits taxpayers and the government alike. The digital invoicing system reflects an effort to build a modernised framework for tax administration that leverages technology to enhance accountability, streamline processes, and improve the ease of doing business in Pakistan.
