ComputerWorld Pakistan Premier Tech Leadership Roundtable
Digitisation As Economic Growth Enabler

First coined in the 1990s, the term digital economy has expanded in consonance with the transforming nature of technology to include digital technologies, products and services across a wide spectrum of sectors. Digitalization is by nature multidimensional. It requires a broad definition to cover all activities that use digitized data as a part of the digital economy (IMF, 2018). Digital economics is the backbone of many high growth developing nations at the moment. Pakistan is no different but has it achieved any concrete movement towards this goal? Businesses and enterprises have been working towards a quicker roadmap to digital transformation but does this take into account a holistic approach to the national growth trajectory?

With economic and other headwinds/tailwinds at play, Pakistan is at a crossroads and transitioning towards technology is not only required but almost an imperative. This will lead to a leaner, more fluid, transparent system of work that benefits both state and citizenry as well as contribute to how Pakistan positions itself as a tech powerhouse regionally as global shifts happen. With our neighbouring countries growing at 11 percent or more on the backbone of digital transformation, why isn’t Pakistan there?

With the SIFC identifying technology as one of the five national focus areas for investment and expansion, we want to take this opportunity to bring together technology leaders from different walks of life and see how they think the sector can enable development and prosperity for Pakistan. With IT exports at an all time high, yet with startup investments at all time lows in the first quarter of 2024, there needs to be a calibration of how we can work together to define more specific pain points and how to ease past them as a sector.

While exports are a focus, import rationalisation, internal product development as well as keeping our startup ecosystem healthy and vigorous is of great importance.

The ComputerWorld Pakistan 40 –  Premier Tech Leaders Roundtable, at ITCN Asia, will add to this conversation by gathering forty leaders from across the tech ecosystem. From electronic governance to enterprise; from payments to cybersecurity, from policy frameworks to Pakistan’s branding strategies; from local tech products to the startup ecosystem; from ecommerce to retail; from academics to industry development; from climate to health to education to agriculture; from emerging tech to innovation in different sectors. Anything that technology touches and touches technology, we want to debate, discuss and take forward.
