Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) has submitted a summary of three candidates for the post of Director General (DG) of the Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) to the federal cabinet for approval.
However, the appointment process has been marred by controversy and allegations of political interference. The haste in finalizing the appointment, following a fourth round of interviews conducted on September 20, 2024, has raised concerns among candidates and stakeholders.
There are reports that none of the three shortlisted candidates meet the required qualifications and experience for the highly technical MP-I scale role. Previously shortlisted and qualified candidates have been excluded from the recent process.
Sources allege that political influence has played a role in the selection of the candidates. Dr. H.U. Khan, Muhammad Farooq, and Zain ul Abidin, the three proposed names, have faced scrutiny over their qualifications and past roles. Dr. H.U. Khan, in particular, has a controversial history, including nullified promotions and multiple dismissals.
The appointment is currently pending in the Islamabad High Court, and the ministry maintains that the final decision will be based on merit.
