For the academic year 2025–26, Computer Science has emerged as the most popular choice among first-year college students in Karachi, reflecting a growing interest in technology-related education across Sindh. According to official data released by the Directorate of Colleges Sindh, a total of 169,923 students have been granted admissions in government colleges across the province under the Sindh Electronic Centralized College Admission Programme (SECAP), marking an increase of approximately 30 per cent compared to the previous year.
The online admission process through SECAP has significantly streamlined enrollment, enabling a more transparent and efficient system for students and institutions. With the new academic session for XI class set to begin on August 5, the digital system has successfully managed placements across disciplines and districts. Karachi leads all cities in terms of volume, with 99,711 students admitted to colleges. Within Karachi, the highest number of students — 31,692 — opted for Computer Science, underscoring a visible shift in academic preference toward digital and computing fields.
Dr. Naveed Rab Siddiqui, Director General of Colleges Sindh, noted that the popularity of Computer Science over traditional streams such as Pre-Medical and Pre-Engineering signifies how students are now aligning their academic goals with emerging career trends in technology. The admission figures show that after Computer Science, Pre-Medical received 22,846 admissions, followed by Commerce with 21,233, Pre-Engineering with 11,386, Humanities with 8,876, and Home Economics with 160 students.
This year, a new administrative policy was also implemented, giving college principals the autonomy to process transfers, admission claims, and cancellations directly. This change is aimed at reducing student dependence on central offices and eliminating unnecessary travel and delays. The move is expected to make the entire process more student-friendly and time-efficient, allowing greater accessibility at the institutional level.
Other major cities in Sindh also reported strong admission activity. Hyderabad saw 26,543 students secure places in intermediate colleges, with the majority — 16,767 — enrolling in Pre-Medical. In Mirpurkhas, 10,618 students were admitted, while Shaheed Benazirabad, Larkana, and Sukkur registered 10,183, 9,889, and 10,979 admissions respectively.
The growing preference for Computer Science among students in Karachi, coupled with an overall rise in admissions across Sindh, reflects a broader societal shift toward digital learning pathways. With the SECAP system continuing to play a central role in digitizing the admissions process, and with more students embracing technology-focused education, Sindh’s education sector is witnessing a quiet but impactful transformation aligned with the demands of a modern digital economy.
