With the China Pakistan Economic Corridor clouding over our heads, the language programs for Mandarin have seen a rise in our country. The task of automatic translation has been on the mind of companies for quite some time now. As we currently have devices that allow us to transfer words and phrases into other languages, none of these applications allow real time translations for multiple languages which especially includes Chinese. In order to bridge the linguistic barrier, the Chinese search engine Baidu launched a device that will translate Chinese into English and vice versa as well.
Baidu released the launch of this device at the MIT Technology Review’s EmTech Digital Conference which took place in San Francisco. They showcased how the translator functions and how it converted both languages directly. The demonstration was given by the Hua Wu and Will Knight who serve as the chief scientist and the senior editor MIT Technology Review respectively. The device converted the real-time conversation that these two were having on stage during the conference.

Baidu has long been considered as the powerhouse in artificial technology in China and have made great improvements in these areas to make communication more convenient for individuals. Baidu has made a breakthrough between communication between different countries and will hence be highly beneficial for Pakistan as well. This can further contribute to better relations in the CPEC Project and will make communication easier between the two parties. As the Chinese language has gained popularity in the country due to the influence of CPEC, individuals are now opting to enroll in Chinese language courses to increase their diversity.
The pocket translator has been available to the public since December 2017 and currently is leased to travel agencies and airports in China which makes work easier there. Baidu plans to expand and vastly improve on this device to incorporate more languages such as Japanese. Their long-term goal is to make this device a universal translator that can be used by the international community and target more markets globally as well.
