The Australian government has introduced a new digital facility for visa applicants through the Australian Immi App, making the application process more accessible and efficient for users across several regions. The announcement, made on Tuesday, highlighted that individuals applying for Australian visas can now directly submit their facial biometric information and passport details using their mobile phones. This marks a significant shift toward streamlining identity verification and reducing the need for in-person appointments for many applicants.
The Australian Immi App is now available in 34 countries and offers eligible users the ability to complete their biometric steps entirely through their smartphones. According to details shared by the Australian Department of Home Affairs, the feature is accessible to clients who have previously provided their biometrics, including facial images and fingerprints, and who hold a valid passport. The department explained that this updated digital process is designed to reduce costs for users and improve the overall processing timeline for visa applications. It allows applicants to avoid travel for biometric submissions, particularly benefiting those who live far from application centers.
Australian High Commissioner to Pakistan Tim Kane also shared the update on X and wrote that applying for an Australian visa from Pakistan “just got easier”. His post included a link to the Australian Department of Home Affairs website where additional information is available through the official platform. The department’s website states that the Australian Immi App, available on Android and iOS devices, enables eligible applicants to provide their passport details along with a facial image directly from their phone. Applicants will need to ensure they have received a Requirement to Provide Personal Identifiers letter with a Visa Lodgement Number that starts with AUI or AUH before using the app for their identity submission. They must also present a valid passport that matches the information being uploaded.
The Department of Home Affairs further detailed the technical requirements needed for the process. The applicant’s smartphone must have location access enabled and support near field communication. These settings must be turned on for the app to successfully scan and confirm passport information. Camera access is also required for capturing the required facial biometric image. Authorities emphasized that these measures ensure that identity verification is completed securely on the applicant’s own device. The app guides users through a series of steps to capture and verify their identity, and a five step guide is available within the app and on the department’s site for those performing the biometric process for the first time.
Once the submission is completed, the Australian Immi App sends the passport details and facial images to the Department of Home Affairs for review. The department stated that in most cases the applicant’s account will reflect the updated status within twenty four hours, unless there is an error that requires additional checks or a repeat submission. This automated transfer of information is expected to support faster handling of visa files and reduce the burden on manual processing teams. By offering this digital pathway, Australia aims to make visa applications simpler, faster, and more accommodating for those applying from overseas, including applicants in Pakistan who qualify to use the mobile based system.
