The eventual growth and rise of smartphones has resulted in their need escalating from a phone call to be able to perform multiple tasks at the same time. With the growing need and popularity of the smartphone, the sheer number of cell-phone purchases have always been improving and increasing. Although it may seem that the sales of smartphones may have been increasing annually, the International Data Corporation beg to differ as they have recently predicted that smartphone sales will see a sharp decline in 2018.
International Data Corporation serves as a provider of market intelligence, advisory services, and events for the information technology, telecommunications, and consumer technology markets. Therefore, with extensive market research on the subject matter, they have predicted that international smartphone sales will decrease in 2018 but will exponentially increase later on due to the rise of 5G network and the captivating India market.

According to IDC Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker, they have expected that smartphone sales will see a decrease to 1.462 billion which will occur for the second year straight. However, they estimate that it will increase to 1.654 billion by the year 2022.
According to IDC, one of the major factors for the decrease is due to the Chinese market as the smartphone industry is expected to struggle by the start of next year. However, this will complement the Indian market as they thrive on low-budget phones sold by Chinese companies. Ryan Reith, Vice President of IDC Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Device Tracker program, highlighted that,
“China remains the focal point for many given that it consumes roughly 30 per cent of the world’s smartphones.”
Moreover, sales would improve after the launch of the 5G network as new smartphones need to be made which will cater to the newest form of telecommunication.
Anthony Scarsella, IDC research manager, emphasized on the new trend as: “This year will continue to focus on the ultra-high-end segment of the market as we expect a surge of premium flagship devices to launch in developed markets”.
