Authorities are set to enhance traffic law enforcement by procuring 8,000 modern body cameras aimed at monitoring the conduct of traffic wardens and ensuring that traffic challans are issued with verifiable video evidence. A senior traffic police official explained that each challan will be accompanied by video proof captured through these body cameras, which will significantly boost transparency in traffic management. This move comes as part of a broader effort to modernize and digitize traffic operations, fostering trust between law enforcement and citizens.
The new body cameras will be equipped with advanced features such as night vision and audio recording, allowing for clear documentation of traffic violations regardless of lighting conditions. These devices will serve a dual purpose: recording offenses and overseeing the behavior of both traffic wardens and the public, thereby promoting accountability on all sides. By capturing real-time video and audio, authorities aim to reduce disputes and ensure fair enforcement of traffic regulations.
Each video recording of a violation will be linked to a QR code, which will be sent directly to the mobile phone of the concerned individual alongside the challan. This integration is expected to increase the transparency of the enforcement process and build public confidence. Moreover, all body cameras will be connected to district-level control rooms as well as a central control room, enabling continuous real-time monitoring and secure data storage. This networked system will allow officials to oversee traffic operations closely and swiftly address any misconduct or technical issues.
According to the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Traffic, the procurement of these cameras is underway, with 3,000 units already acquired and the remaining scheduled for purchase within the current financial year. Officials anticipate that this initiative will play a crucial role in strengthening the enforcement of traffic laws and improving public perception of the traffic management system. The adoption of this technology reflects ongoing efforts to leverage digital tools for enhanced governance and public service delivery.
