Sightsavers Pakistan is urging for better access to assistive technology in honor of the inaugural World Day of Assistive Technology on June 4th.

Sightsavers is inviting the government, other organizations, and individuals to recognize the significant impact assistive devices can have on the lives of people with disabilities worldwide. The organization aims to raise awareness about the crucial role this technology plays in empowering individuals and the importance of ensuring everyone has access to it as a fundamental right.

Assistive technology encompasses a wide range of tools, from wheelchairs and eyeglasses to hearing aids and digital devices. These devices can improve mobility, communication, and vision, ultimately allowing people with disabilities to live more independently and experience a better quality of life.

Munazza Gillani, Director of Sightsavers Pakistan and the Middle East, highlighted the organization’s longstanding commitment to providing essential services and advocating for the rights of people with disabilities. “This first-ever World Day of Assistive Technology is a significant step towards inclusivity and equality,” she said.

“We believe everyone deserves the opportunity to live a full and independent life,” Gillani continued. “Assistive technologies are more than just tools; they are lifelines for many people. We are dedicated to making these essential devices accessible to those in need.”

Sightsavers actively invests in initiatives that enhance access to assistive technology. They provide eyeglasses, low vision devices, and wheelchairs to underprivileged individuals with various impairments. The organization recognizes the lack of access to trained professionals and the financial barriers faced by people, particularly in rural areas.

Beyond vision, Sightsavers is committed to improving mobility and accessibility for people with disabilities. They provide wheelchairs and other assistive devices, along with promoting the development of disability-friendly infrastructure. Their goal is to ensure everyone, regardless of physical limitations, can lead a fulfilling life.

Amna Ali, a recipient of Sightsavers’ services, shared her experience: “Receiving a wheelchair completely changed my life. Before, going to school and the park was very difficult. Now, I can go to school independently thanks to my wheelchair.”
